Adding a book product

Modified on Thu, 16 Jul 2020 at 09:41 PM

A book product defines the cover and interior page sizes & guidelines. A book product must be created before assigning licenses to schools. Publishers may have more than one book product - for instance hard cover & softcover options, or various sized books.

To add a new book product, select Manage book products on the left-side menu. If this is your first time to add a book product, the list of products will be empty.

Click on Add book product to enter the specifications for your new product.

General Information

Under the General tab, include basic branding and setup information that applies to the entire product.

  • Specify the product name, as displayed to your customers and on your book product list.
  • Optionally add a product SKU code, using your internal system code. The SKU will be added to the manifest file uploaded with your clients' pdf file, improving the ease of your production workflow.
  • Provide the minimum and maximum number of pages for this product. Note that your clients will be warned if they fall over or under this count in the book manager, and will be blocked from submitting the book to you if they are outside the range.
  • Indicate whether the first inside page is on the left or right side: for yearbooks that are printed on the inside cover, choose Left; or yearbooks that start on the first interior not attached to the cover, choose Right.
  • Last, specify the required number of page multiples (no requirement, 2 or 4 as per your signature formatting). Note that your clients will be blocked from submitting their books should they not meet your required signature style, prompting them to add or remove pages as required.

Output Settings

Under output settings, type the dpi at which the finalized pdf file will be produced, and specify if you wish to receive the interior pages as a single pdf or a series of one-page pdf files.

Resolution Warnings

Last, specify your resolution tolerances.  When your client uses a low quality image in their yearbook, they will see a warning sign. A yellow symbol will appear on images that are below your warning value, and a red error symbol will appear on images that are below your error value.

Single Page Dimensions

Page dimensions are specified in three areas:

  • Trim size: the dimensions of a single interior page after printing and trimming
  • Bleed inflate: extra padding added to your trim dimensions to ensure edge-to-edge coverage
  • Safe inset: guidelines designed to discourage placement of images or text too near the trim edge.

Values can be set on the gutter, edge, top and bottom of the page. In the Editor, these areas correspond to the following.
Note the red bleed inflate and the green safe line.

After you have added all your specifications, you will find a total rendered page calculation at the bottom of the tab.

Cover Page Dimensions

Cover dimensions are specified in four areas:

  • Trim size: the dimensions of the front cover after printing and trimming.
  • Bleed inflate: extra padding added to your trim dimensions to ensure edge-to-edge coverage
  • Safe inset: guidelines designed to discourage placement of images or text too near the trim edge
  • Spine width: extra area added between the front and the back cover, indicated by guidelines.

Safe insets can bet set on the gutter, edge, top and bottom of the page. Bleed value is set to the edge, top and bottom - it's not added to the gutter since the cover is rendered as a single sheet, and bleed inflation can only occur on a trimmed side.

In the Editor, these areas correspond to the following. The red bleed inflate and the green safe line are indicated on the page as are the spine guidelines.

After you have added all your specifications, you will find a total rendered cover sheet calculation at the bottom of the tab.

Completing your new product addition

Be sure to click on the Add Book Product button in the top right corner to complete your listing.

The product can be edited after initial setup provided it has not been assigned to a school's book.

Click on Add Book Product again to complete your setup.
