Adding a Book Product

Modified on Fri, 6 Sep at 1:01 PM

A book product includes the different cover types, interior page sizes, and other options related to a yearbook. You must create a book product before assigning a book to a school. Publishers may have multiple book products, such as hardcover and softcover options or various sizes.

Table of Contents

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Manage Book Products Tab

To add a new book product, select "Manage Book Products" Tab (A) from the left-side menu. If this is your first time adding a book product, the product list will be empty.

Add Book Product

Click on "Add Book Product" (A) to create a new book product.

General Tab

The "General" (A) tab is used to define the overall options for the book product.

Product Name and SKU (A1)

Create a product name that reflects the type of yearbook you intend to print and later assign to a school, for example, "8.5 x 11 Soft and Hard Cover." The "Book Type SKU" is a customizable field that can enhance integration with your workflow. This is especially helpful when utilizing the API or generating sales reports.

Global Page Settings (A2)

  1. Minimum and Maximum Number of Pages: Provide the minimum and maximum number of pages for this product. Typically, these values should align with the spine thickness of the cover.

  2. First Inside Page Position: Indicate whether the first inside page is on the left or right side.
    • Choose "Left" if the yearbook's first page is printed on the inside cover.
    • Choose "Right" if the yearbook starts on the first interior page not attached to the cover.

  3. Page Multiples Requirement: Specify the required page multiples (no requirement, 2, or 4) based on your signature formatting. Keep in mind that your clients will be prevented from submitting their books if they don't adhere to your required signature style, and they will be prompted to add or remove pages as necessary.

PDF Render Settings (A3)

Define the DPI (dots per inch) at which the finalized PDF file will be produced. Additionally, specify whether you prefer to receive the interior pages as a single PDF file or as a series of individual one-page PDF files.

Minimum Image DPI (A4)

Specify the minimum DPI requirements for the photos, backgrounds, or design elements that your customers upload for use in the yearbook. When a client uses a low-quality image, a warning sign will appear:

  • A yellow symbol will indicate images that fall below your DPI warning threshold.
  • A red error symbol will indicate images that fall below your DPI error threshold.

We recommend setting the DPI warning at 200 and the DPI error at 150.

Single Page (B)

The dimensions for a single page are defined under the "Single Page" tab.

Trim Size (B1)

Specify the exact width and height of your page in the "Trim Size" area.

TIP: A real-time graphic is displayed to show the page area, bleed area, and safe zone, giving you a clear preview of your yearbook's final dimensions.

Bleed Inflate (B2)

Specify the Bleed Inflate, which is extra padding added to your trim dimensions to ensure edge-to-edge coverage. You can adjust the bleed size on the gutter, edge, top, and bottom to match your printing capabilities.

TIP: Use the real-time graphics to check if the result meets your expectations. Additionally, refer to the "Final Rendered Page Dimensions" (B4) area, where the exact total width and height of the produced PDF are provided.

Safe Inset (B3)

Define the safe inset, which determines the safe printing area where text or important parts of images should be placed to avoid being cut off. You can adjust the safe inset for the gutter, edge, top, and bottom to match your printing capabilities.

Final Rendered Page Dimensions (B4)

The "Final Rendered Page Dimensions" section provides important information by displaying the exact and final width and height of a rendered PDF page. This section also includes the formula used to calculate the final dimensions, helping you ensure they match your printing requirements.

Covers

Memento Yearbook provides various cover options. Click on "Add Cover" (C) to reveal a drop-down menu offering different types of covers. Choose the cover type you want to add. Please note that you can assign multiple covers to a book product.

IMPORTANT: We highly recommend creating book products with all possible cover options supported from the start. This allows you to easily manage the number of pages and the various covers a school may want when assigning a book product to them. The advantage of this approach is the ability to enable or disable covers easily, which is especially useful if a school decides to change their cover preferences during the season.

While you can still assign a different book product later, doing so may result in the loss of the complete cover design.

Soft Cover, Hard Cover & Saddle Stitch Cover

As mentioned previously, you can define a book product with one or multiple covers, depending on your workflow. However, we recommend including all cover options if possible, to align with your printing facilities. This approach will reduce maintenance and simplify the process of creating school books and updating covers.

Softcover, Hardcover, and Saddle Stitch covers share the same parameters that need to be defined.

Trim Size

Specify the exact width and height of your page in the "Trim Size" area. Only specify the front cover size, as the software will double the width automatically,,

TIP: A real-time graphic is displayed to show the cover area, bleed area, safe zone and spine, giving you a clear preview of your cover's final dimensions.

Bleed Inflate

Specify the Bleed Inflate, which is extra padding added to your trim dimensions to ensure edge-to-edge coverage. You can adjust the bleed size on the edge, top, and bottom to match your printing capabilities.

TIP: Use the real-time graphics to check if the result meets your expectations. Additionally, refer to the "Final Rendered Page Dimensions" area, where the exact total width and height of the produced cover PDF are provided.

Safe Inset

Define the safe inset, which determines the safe printing area where text or important parts of images should be placed to avoid being cut off. You can adjust the safe inset for the gutter, edge, top, and bottom to match your printing capabilities.

Spine Width

Specify the spine width of your cover based on the page ranges you have defined in the General Tab section.

Final Rendered Page Dimensions

The "Final Rendered Page Dimensions" section provides important information by displaying the exact and final width and height of a rendered PDF page. This section also includes the formula used to calculate the final dimensions, helping you ensure they match your printing requirements.

Soft Cover Insert

A Soft Cover Insert is typically used when you offer the option to print on the inside cover left page at the front of the book and the inside cover right page at the end of the book.

The Soft Cover Insert shares the same parameters as the Single Page. Please refer to the "Single Page" section to learn how to set the specific parameters for the Soft Cover Insert.

Please note that you cannot add a Soft Cover Insert unless the Soft Cover option is selected.

Hard Cover Endsheet

The Hard Cover Endsheet shares the same parameters as Covers. Please refer to the "Soft Cover, Hard Cover & Saddle Stitch" section to learn how to set the specific parameters for the Hard Cover Endsheet.

Please note that you cannot add a Hard Cover Endsheet unless the HardCover option is selected.
